RINCON, Ga. (WJCL) Every athlete dreams of winning a state championship. But, some Rincon kids are starting earlier than others.
Last weekend, both the 8U baseball and softball all-star teams from the Rincon Recreation Department claimed Georgia Recreation and Park Association State Championships.
“It felt exciting, some of us cried and we were all hugging each other,” says Connor Griffin.
“It means a lot to me cause our team played so well all this year,” adds Michael Hesling.
While baseball and softball success is nothing new on the fields in Effingham County, the dual state championship wins claimed over the weekend in Cordele was a historic happening in Effingham County.
“It means a lot because we were actually the first girls team to come in first,” says Sabrina Alvarado. “We worked hard to get here.”
“We are warriors,” says Dru Futch.
Hitting the fields hours away from home didn’t phase these young ball players. Both squads played with poise and a purpose on their way to being crowned the best in the Peach State.
“We got better every game,” says Josh Ford. “We didn’t really win that many tournament, but we won the one that mattered the most.”
